Solastalgia #2: Monument to Solastalgia. 2021
‘Monument to Solastalgia’ is just as it is called; A structure of importance created in memory of, and to call and mark acknowledgement for the experience and effects of solastalgia on one’s person.
This work intends to direct the stagnating yearning and grief that comes from solastalgia, into a tangible, though provoking dialogue with space and time. It acts to acknowledge and validate the common shared experience of emotion while at the same time, presenting potential endeavours for the future. In its simplest this work is able to act as a reminder, to focus on what we lose and to what we have yet to gain.
The incorporation of found organic and natural objects juxtapose against the inorganic medium of the structure, this is intended to act as a metaphor on a larger scale of human interference with nature, while at the same time, the structure frames found objects, centring the focus on the material preciousness and sacredness which is found in nature.
This work is to be interacted with in a way that it can be touched, added to, and to remove found objects to it or to add and light a candle. In this way the monument behaves like a shrine, through decoration, the structure can help heal the pain of solastalgia.
